Smart Quotes for Setting and Achieving Goals

Back to Index of Newsletters

From NetSpeed Leader Volume 14, December 2003

For our module on setting and achieving goals, we interviewed David Metzger, manager of business analysts, at Russell Investment Group, global leaders in multi-manager investing. Here are some of David’s practical quotes:

"Complex or difficult goals need to be broken into simple parts. Make sure the entire team sees that simple goals and simple actions are all that is needed to achieve the goals, and that they accept accountability for achieving them."

"Sometimes you have to accept that people outside your area of control can constrain your ability to achieve the entire goal. Set a leadership example by doing what you can to achieve the goal with your immediate work group, and then start influencing others who may have different priorities. You may find that there’s a different, better goal that needs to be achieved."

"Achieving a goal or objective does not mean having a perfect solution. Adopt a philosophy of continuous improvement over a reasonable period of time."
