From NetSpeed Leader Volume 25, 2/16/06
I was at a party over the holidays, talking with the manager of leadership development at a local company, when she began to express her doubts about the well-respected, e-learning program that her company used to develop their managers’ skills. “There’s just nothing there,” she lamented.
Being the CEO of a blended learning company, I probed a bit. “It’s just not deep enough,” she added. “Perhaps what’s missing,” I suggested, “is the opportunity to reflect, practice, collaborate and share real-world experiences.” She readily agreed but she also insisted that it’s just not possible to get that kind of reflection, practice, collaboration and experience-sharing across a multi-national organization with small numbers of employees in different regions and time zones.
She’s in a bit of a bind now isn’t she? She knows their managers need a deeper learning experience, recognizes that it comes from peer-to-peer interaction solving real-world issues, but believes there’s no way to facilitate that collaborative approach in her organization.
So here are some questions for reflection: How often do you believe that you’re dealing with an “unsolvable” problem? How does your belief that “it can’t be done” prevent you from doing it?
Here’s a challenge: name one “unsolvable” problem on your desk today, and determine two steps you can take to solve it. Then email newsletter@netspeedleadership.com and tell us what you did. We’d love to hear from you!
