Make It Personal - Before, During and After
If I were to offer up one piece of advice that has
served me well through the past 20 years of training,
it’s to “make it personal.”
Before I conduct a training delivery, I want to
know not just what the organization wants to
achieve from this training experience but also what
are the individual learners’ objectives. In both cases,
it’s important to know what’s in it for them business-
wise. How achieving the goals of the workshops,
changing behaviors, will make a difference in their
professional lives.
During the training, it’s invaluable to make a
personal connection with each learner and a
connection between the training content and their
job challenge. The better I can make this link, the
more relevant they feel the training is, and more
engaged they’ll be in the training. A key to my
success as a trainer, to the success of the training
itself, is how well I can clearly demonstrate that the
new skills being learned will have a direct positive
impact on their performance effectiveness and work
life.
After the training, I always try to find out
how the training went and look for follow-up
opportunities to provide additional support and/or
coaching. Training should not be a one-time event, but an
ongoing process.
Bottom line: The more you as a trainer can
demonstrate that you care about each individual and
their learning and professional objectives in the
training experience, the more powerful the
experience will be, for both the individual learner and
yourself. |
