    NetSpeed Leadership Webinar Subscription Series

    Over the past year, we've been offering a free monthly webinar on different NetSpeed Leadership module topics. We just wrapped up that program with Transforming Team Conflict. Why free? Well, we wanted to get our feet wet, experiment with web conferencing as a delivery mechanism for training, and practice building in interactivity and participation.

    Small Steps, Big Gains

    I can ice skate backwards! If you receive the NetSpeed Leader, our semi-regular newsletter, you may recall in the October issue my Candidly column on finding those "coachable" moments with our employees. I described my own frustrating and eye-opening experience trying to teach myself how to skate backwards. Let me just say that it's a lot harder than it looks.

    To Boldly Go Where No Woman Has Gone Before

    I love what I do because it gives me endless opportunities to be on the risky, cutting-edge of things. Being a creative sort, I enjoy experimenting, testing, and playing with new ideas. This trait has not always been appreciated by my employers who often found me to be a maverick or a renegade. Running my own training and consulting company is a natural fit for my personality. The only trouble I can get into is creating a product or service that no one wants.

    Learning New Skills

    I'm a learner again. We're now offering monthly web workshops to give people an opportunity to learn more about NetSpeed Leadership while developing their professional skills. I'm learning how to use the web conference platform, how to present content via the web, and how to make the sessions interactive. It's hard to be a novice when my sense of identity is built on being an expert. In fact learning a new skill set is not for the faint of heart!

    Language Barriers

    I'm back this week from a fascinating week in Granada, Nicaragua. While we were there, my 6-year old daughter had a health care challenge that required immediate medical care. As the doctor examined her, he scolded me in Spanish for waiting too long to bring her in. (Since I had already scolded myself in English, it was really unnecessary—I felt terrible.)

    The Lessons of Failure

    I'm thinking about failure today. I live in Seattle where we just experienced the failure of the Seahawks to win the Super Bowl. (I've recovered from my disappointment now.)

    Failure is also on my mind because this morning I heard Marja Brandon speak at a networking breakfast. Marja is the Founder of the Seattle Girls School, a revolutionary private school that is changing the way girls are taught.

    Needs No Translation

    I just returned from Korea where I conducted a trainer certification workshop for seven trainers from CJ, one of the largest companies in Korea. It was a fascinating experience for many reasons. I trained in English and someone simultaneously translated into Korean for the participants. When the trainees delivered their final presentations, they used Korean while someone translated their words into English for me.
